This 10-inch shallow subwoofer handles 800 watts max., 200 watts nominal power, and delivers deep bass with top-notch sound quality thanks to features like Pioneer’s extremely strong and lightweight interlaced composite IMPP Cone.
Lean and Mean
The Pioneer Shallow Series subwoofer derives its big bass sound from its innovative design. Although only 3-1/4 inches thick, the Shallow Series uses state-of-the-art, patented air suspension technology to create a tight spring of pressure that delivers a wide-ranging bass response. The result is a radically thin subwoofer that fits a variety of enclosures and gives your system accurate, powerful, and satisfying bass.
“ib-FLAT”
Known as the “flat” subwoofer, the ib-FLAT name is derived from the speaker’s two most outstanding characteristics. The “i” stands for intelligent design and describes the cutting-edge air-suspension technology that gives the speaker its remarkable size and strength. “b FLAT” refers to its ability to accurately and easily play 29.135 Hertz, the sound of the lowest black key on the piano and one of the most difficult to reproduce. Musical and robust, the ib-FLAT boasts an amazing range, enabling you to hear each performance on a grand scale.
Install Anywhere
The sleek design and compact size of Pioneer Shallow Series subs enables you to perform great custom installations. The Shallow Series plays perfectly in both tight and hidden spaces, providing you with the same booming bass performance of a regular subwoofer. Whether hidden or seen, the big bass sound of these versatile speakers will definitely get you noticed.
Air Suspension System
In order to create a subwoofer that is three and a quarter inches deep, Pioneer had to develop revolutionary subwoofer technology. A traditional subwoofer uses the spider design to keep the voice coil of the speaker aligned while it moves. This type of set-up can become soft over time degrading the subwoofer’s performance. Pioneer created a patent-pending air suspension system that locks air between a main cone and a drive cone. The cones move together in unison, with the locked-in air behaving like a spring. The dual-cone structure is a spider-less design that maintains better sound linearity, and reliability even after many of hours of hard use.
The pressure from the trapped air results in a consistent bass response across a wide frequency range. The result is a tight, precise movement with powerful and clean bass output.
3-Layer Interwoven Radial Surround
The shallow subwoofer incorporates an innovative woven cloth reinforced radial urethane surround for improved power handling, reduced distortion, improved durability, and louder, more controlled bass. The surround is constructed of three layers–two of urethane and one of interwoven cloth. The interwoven cloth distributes strength throughout the surround material and improving its high power capability. The result is an extremely durable and resilient surround that resists puckering, even under intense power conditions.
Unlike traditional surrounds that use a single arch shape design, the Pioneer Shallow Subwoofer utilizes a patent-pending M-shape surround that provides superior sound linearity.
M-Shaped Surround
The M-shape surround also has a lower height, and a lower fc or tuning frequency. The lower fc threshold translates to better and longer performance at lower frequencies.
Angled Push Terminals
Traditional subwoofer terminals are mounted horizontally or vertically. These mounts force wires to be bent to fit which can be difficult if low-gauge high performance wires are used. The Pioneer shallow subwoofer’s patent-pending, angled push terminals make it easy to connect speaker wires. The straighter connection saves space and makes installation easier.
Fin-Shaped Basket
Traditional subwoofers push air downward. This creates a “loading effect’ or area of pressure underneath the speaker which hampers performance and responsiveness. The rear of the powerful and slim Pioneer shallow subwoofer is designed with specially-shaped fins that channel the airflow sideways instead of downward. Air is continuously pushed in a circular motion, eliminating the “loading effect” or unwanted pressure of air behind the cone.
This 10-inch shallow subwoofer handles 800 watts.

I bought this Pioneer subwoofer for a really great deal. It is a very good product and I have not had any problems with it. Hits hard and sounds great. I would recommend this product to any of my friends. Pioneer is a great brand. I also have 2 Pioneer door speakers 240w max and they also sound great. My sub is powered by a 760w max amplifier made by Pioneer. (Reviewed by her son).
Before running this subwoofer, I had a 12″ Pioeer 400w sub in a massive 16x18x18 enclosure. My only reservation about switching to the smaller sub and box was that I’d lose a lot of my bass kick– I was wrong. This little speaker is brilliantly designed! The internal fins push air out to the sides instead of straight down. The result is a full-range of bass in a very small package. People are shocked when I show them the size of the sub that’s been making all the ruckus in my car!
I’d recommend this to anyone who’s looking to save space in the boot and maintain a great-sounding low end to their system.
My brother purchased this sub for xmas for me. We built the ported box to specs with minor alteration (we rounded up on measurments). I have a Pyle 1150 amp and this sub—-SOUNDS GREAT!!! I didn’t want so much bass you loose the music, Ijust wanted slightly feel it. This sub delivers! Hits hard for its size. I have it in my 2001 S10 crew cab truck. My 6yr old likes the way it feels on his back. If the 10″ sounds this good I wonder what the 12″ would sound like. Maybe next year.
Really is a good sub if the shallow mount space is needed. the price was not too bad and you will not regret buying it.
I was sick of the lack luster performance of my stock Radio. For most people, it would be fine. I like a little bass to my music. I looked around and bought a custom box for my new Extended cab truck, and found a low profile speaker, at a damn good price (normally $199 at best buy, but $47 at Amazon). I put a 500 Peak amp to it, and have it barley turned on. The bass is amazing. I used to have 1500 Watt systems in my youth, and this is very near those bass hits. I would suggest to anyone, buy this speaker if you are tight on room, and what something the hits hard a crisp.
Shallow mount subwoofers are becoming very popular because the technology has gotten to the point that they are actually good, not just thin. Shallow mount means that the box it fits into can be quite thin from front to back. In the case of the Pioneer TSSW251 the internal volume can be very small as well. This means the sub can be mounted in more locations, often out of the way and hidden.
Note the rear view of the Pioneer sub. It is very unusual and clearly a lot of engineering effort has gone into making these things work. It is not just a flattened out conventional design.
I was able to hide it away in a cubby hole and got rid of the big box that used to take up a lot of cargo area, could attract thieves and would probably hit me in the back of the head in a collision.
Pioneer has recommended box volumes. Mine is home-made and is below the optimum size, but it still works very nicely, with a lot more bass than the previous traditional long-throw (deep dish) 8″ sub in a far bigger box. It is designed for a sealed box, not a ported design.
Any decent amp will power it. No need for 1000 watts. I used a 350 watt mono Alpine.
I was very pleased with the price. It actually seems inexpensive for what you get.
