  1. Mark D Jordan Says:

I have had the TomTom car kit for iPhone for about 2 weeks now and am very happy with it.

    1) I see others have had a problems with the mount rotating the phone from horizontal to vertical while driving. I am not sure what they are doing, but I have not had that problem, not once.
    2) I do think the device is a bit expensive, I think TomTom should drop the price to about $50.
    3) The extra GPS lock is better then the iPhone on its own, but it is not a huge difference that I can see. It does get a lock faster, and it does notice a missed turn faster, but on the order of a second or two. While this seems small, when you are driving a second or two can be the difference between missing a turn and not missing it.
    4) The integrated speaker is very good. It is clear, and loud.
    5) The speaker phone is very good. I had a stand alone blue tooth speaker phone in my car which cost me about $100, and this is “better” then that one.
    6) The integration with the iPod music function on the phone is great. The ability to listen to music and use the GPS at the same time, and have the GPS lower the music while it tells you of a turn is fantastic.
    7) The mount has a socket to plug into the car sound system. It will then play music and GPS prompts via the car sound system, but voice calls via the GPS on board speaker. Personally I want it to play music out of the car sound system, but voice calls and GPS prompts via the in mount speaker. I wish I could set which of the three (voice calls, music, gps prompts) plays out which speaker. This would be a great software upgrade from TomTom.
    8) The fit of the mount is great. I have a cozip hard case on my iPhone and I can still mount it with no problem. I am sure some cases will not work with the mount, but at least the cozip works fine. I do not have to take my iPhone out of the case to put it in the mount. This flexibility is a huge bonus for this mount.
    9) The mount stability is rock solid. I get no wiggle, no vibration at all. This is very important when driving with GPS as any wiggle makes it much harder to see the map when in motion. TomTom did a great job on this issue.
    10) The mount’s flexibility is very very good. It can rotate from horizontal to vertical orientation for the iPhone. The mount can be set in all dimensions so you can get it in a position that is just right for you. I have mine angled so that while the windshield is on a steep angle, the iPhone is at a 90 degree angle to the earth, but tilted about 3 degrees towards the driver (left to right).
    11) Wire connections are fantastic. The mount has its own power connector, bluetooth, and headphone jack. Once the mount is set up you just pop the iPhone onto the Apple Connector and that activates everything. I need do nothing other than start using the device. There are no wires to set up each time you get in the car.

Overall this is the best iPhone mount I have ever used. The integration with GPS, Voice Calls, and Music is beyond anything I have ever seen before. This is hands down the best mount for the iPhone I have ever seen. The ONLY issue is even with this level of quality, over $100 seems like too much money. On the other hand, if you can afford it, you won’t get a better mount at any price.

  2. Chris Dean Says:

This is exactly what I want. It transformed my iPhone into a full featured with Text To Speech GPS navigation devise (and it works also with the ipod touch, if you happen to have one). What a convenience.
Let me start off by noting that this is a mixed-bag, and it greatly depends on your expectations, and more so on what you’re looking for. So, please read more reviews to get the benefits of various prospective.
The kit came complete with everything needed, except for the Navigation App. A number of apps is available on the market, I personally like Road Mate.
The adjustable vehicle mounting is very well built, sturdy, and holds the device very securely. You have a choice of mounting the cradle on the windshield with the suction cup, or use the dashboard mount. The built in amplified speaker is powerful. And the speakerphone has a noise cancelling feature (does not work so great though, people on the other end complained about noise); non-the less, the speaker is load and clear. The Bluetooth will pair with any phone, not only iPhone (if you use the kit with an ipod and regular phone). A car charger is also included.
Unlike other reviewers who complained about frequent satellite signal loss, I did not have this problem, may be because I have it mounted closer to the windshield?
The included maps are outdated, but, like other Magellan products, you can update the maps by calling Magellan’s customer service within 30days of purchase.

  3. Chad Creel Says:

    Excelent!!

Very useful for the iPhone. The hands-free feature is amazing. Bluetooth sometimes do not connect. Just unplug and plug it again and it will work.

    Nice purchase.

  4. Deborah Pretty Says:

    — Please scroll down for an update with my experiment with iPhone 4 –

I’ve had this well over a month now and it’s been working really well. There are enough positive comments out there about it so instead of repeating what others said, I would like to comment on one thing that many negative comments are focused on:

    - The phone rotating itself into portrait mode from landscape mode when you hit a bump

It is NOT TRUE if positioned correctly. Let me explain below.

The cradle portion of the device that rotates also slides and this allows to locate the pivot point of the cradle to be at the center of the phone in the landscape/horizontal mode preventing the problem described above. If you simply rotate it to the landscape mode without sliding it, it will locate the pivot point at the end of the phone and this makes it very easy for the phone to rotate down to the portrait mode.

I hope this review will prevent people from thinking that this device is defective based on others experiencing difficulties with the landscape mode.

I will get my iPhone 4 in a few weeks to I will update this review then.

    – iPhone 4 update –

I got my iPhone last week and I tried it with the cradle. In short, it does work with a tweak but there is a catch:

Problem – The cradle has a connector that rotates forward to make the docking easier but this mechanism gets in a way with making it work for iPhone 4. The phone is too thin leaving the rotating connector still tilted forward when you insert the phone in place. This prevents the connector from getting inserted deep into the device to secure a proper contact.

Solution – After a analyzing the problem, I came up with a simple solution. I taped a quarter (yes, a 25 cents coin) to the said connector so that the clearance between the phone and the back of the rotating connector piece is tight. I taped it so that the connector still rotates and that the quarter (conductive!) does not touch the actual connector.

Result – I have been using the cradle almost everyday this way and it’s been working perfectly. Compared to the iPhone 3G which was very spotty, slow and inaccurate, GPS is accurate almost within a few feet! The Tomtom software launches really quickly and also the in-app google search works really quickly. In short, it works better than my stand alone Tomtom GPS.

Problem – Now, I took it for a long drive this weekend with my family in a hot day with an outside temperature exceeding 100 degrees Fahrenheit (close to 40 degrees Celsius) and I soon realized that the whole thing overheated after an hour or so and the iPhone shut down when that happened. My friend told me that iPhone 4 tended to overheat more easily but I have not confirmed that. My fix was to mount the cradle on the side window to avoid the direct sun light. Of course this isn’t an ideal position from a cable management perspective but it was surprisingly useful in this location until I wanted to roll down the window. As long as I avoided the direct sunlight, it was no problem. Now, driving for 30 min in a direct sunlight did not cause any problem during my commutes last week so I guess it was a combination of a very high temperature and a long trip.

I tested all the functions including the free Tomtom cradle app and they all worked fine. The free app did identify my iPhone as “iPhone 4.01″.

  5. Bob Howard Says:

Works good. Plastc seems a little cheap and the rotation is a bit loose.

  6. Melissa Nathans Says:

I use this with the iPhone 4 and it fits perfect, no issues. I only use this a couple times a month when I travel and it works great as a navigation device with the Magellan RoadMate App. It does a great job of fitting and securing the iPhone even with cases. It also secures very well to the window or dash. I find that it works better with the iPhone 4 than it did with my old 3G. Now it never drops the GPS signal and the whole system starts up and works much faster.

The sound and mic quality are the only weak parts of this item. The speaker is awful when you are driving and there is road noise, you either set it low and can’t hear, or turn the volume up and it is too distorted to understand. I am also told by the people I am talking to that the mic is terrible. I have found the iPhone’s speaker phone to be more useful, and that is almost unusable in a car on the highway with all the noise. At this price, I really have trouble understanding how the speaker is so bad.

I would highly recommend if you use it like me, mostly for occasional navigation. If you intend need it for phone calls, I would search for something else, I think this will greatly disappoint.

  7. Len Stauffenger Says:

Although the description of the Magellan Premium Car Kit doesn’t say that this supports the iPhone 4, I saw several comments from buyers who said that they were using it with that phone. Trust me – it doesn’t work with the iPhone 4!

I returned the first one, thinking that I just had a bad device. The second one did the same thing. The power cable “lights up” and you can definitely see that the Bluetooth connection is working, and even pair with your iPhone 4. However, the Car Kit doesn’t charge the iPhone 4, and that’s a problem. GPS usage tends to really suck down your battery life, and without the ability to charge the phone while driving, it’s worthless.

On the other hand, it is a well-made product, as one would expect from Magellan. The mount is very sturdy, and holds the iPhone securely. The speaker is quite loud, too.

Regretfully, I’m going to have to buy a Car Kit that will charge the iPhone 4 as well, so I’m hoping the TomTom Car Kit works.

  8. Norm Pavelka Says:

Bought this product to convert the iPod touch into a do-it-all Navigation System. While the price isn’t great (you have to buy a GPS app too), it is really nice to have only one device for your iPod and Nav system. I previously had bought the TomTom car kit, but it was not usable because the size doesn’t adjust for cases. The Magellan kit is very easy to move your device in and out of the holder and adjusts to any size case. It also has a loud and clear speaker (I’m actually using it with the TomTom app).

Also, the bluetooth hands-free speaker phone feature works with any phone. So you can have an iPod touch and your regular cell phone hooked up to it. You don’t need to have an iPhone.

Really, this is a great option for an iPod touch and makes standalone GPS units irrelevant.

(Of course, an iPhone or Android is more of an all-in-one solution, but if you don’t want to be tied down to a phone contract or data plan, this is a great solution).

  9. Andrew Choong Says:

I bought this to use mostly as a hands free cradle and amplifier for my car – not so much for the GPS functions. Magellan’s website proudly claims it is compatible with the iphone 4 but after some issues I called tech support and was told that this unit is actually not compatible with the iphone 4. I asked them why they say it is on their website and over the phone claim it isn’t… I got nothing but confusing rhetoric in poor english. I think the phone banks are in Indonesia or something because I had a tough time understanding them… Normally I don’t mind but I was trying to get clear answers for a simple question and it was frustrating.
The issues I had were the bluetooth connection distorting and screeching over the speaker during calls and a recurring message on my phone saying ‘device not compatible’. After a week things settled down and it seems to be working fine but for this price Magellan should care about their customers a little more and stop the false advertising.

  10. Steven Merusi Says:

I looked at the Tom Tom version of the car kit and I didn’t like it because you couldn’t use it with a case and you can’t use it with an IPhone 4. This car kit rocks I love it. I wish I would have got one sooner. It will not work though with an Apple bumper on your IPhone 4. That was the only problem I saw but not that big of a deal. I got a new case today and it works well with the IPhone 4 with a case on it.
I am a huge Tom Tom guy but the Magellan car kit beats Tom Toms and I would highly recommend this if you have any IPhone of IPod touch!

  11. Eric B. Jose Says:

I ordered this dock to hold my iphone 3GS and also provide increased gps accuracy while using my tom-tom app. It does both of these things extremely well. It keeps the phone charged and holds it in place securely on my dash. I love that it rotates so I can leave it in portrait mode when not using the tom-tom app. So far I am completely pleased with this purchase and I would recommend this dock for use with gps apps on the iPhone.

  12. Joey Larusa Says:

Just trust me and get 1 already but if you are not sure then continue to read below. :)

    Pros:

A very nice, secured and well constructed cradle, it hold my Ipod Touch and a friend’s Iphone very securely which in term give the owner of the very expensive Iphone/Ipod touch a sense of security about how safe their toys are.

    - many would not consider this as a pro but to me the ability of not having to take the protective cover off before inserted into the cradle is a great big deal. I didn’t purchased the protective cover/case just to take it out when it may be most needed.

    - I’ve been travel with this to over 6 different states and this device would only drop its signal only a small amount of time that I can count with 1 hand. which to me is very surprising considering this is only an add-in and not a built in.

    - The charger, the Bluetooth, the AUX port, and the Speaker are useful. The Bluetooth especially can be use with other devices with a great intercepting range with great clarity.

    - The suction on the cradle is one of the best I’ve seen. unlike some suction cup that make you wonder when apply to windshield or mat, this thing will erase any doubt you have regarding its ability to hold on. I’ve driven on dirt road where even my fat belly wouldn’t hug well on my seat and yet this thing would not let go of my Ipod.

    Cons:

    - the only thing I can think of is the charger. it seem even though the port on the device look just like a regular USB port you find on your phone, camera, and etc.. it seem none of my other cable would work even though it fitted perfectly. This may not be a con as much as an inconvenience, just worry about what happen when I misplaced or break the power adapter that came with it.

Over all I would recommend this device to anyone that love to travel and always get lost. I believe even with just as a wireless Bluetooth device, a charger, an AUX connectivity, and cradle, this device is already worth a lot of money already therefore one is not actually paying much for the GPS feature at all. Please note, I’ve heard many reviewer mentioned Motion X software as a cheap alternative software to use with this device, please reconsider it if you just have an Ipod Touch or a limited data plan Iphone since this device and Motion X will not work for you as Motion X required you to have a data source at all time to download live guidance and map. If you have just an Ipod touch , you may have to duke out the money and buy the more expensive app like navigon, tom tom, and etc.. which in a way would help since even your Iphone does not have data coverage everywhere you go and well no one wants a huge bill for using data while out of their service area. One other thing I would like to justify for this unit which I saw many reviewer pointed out as a bad thing, the AUX port. The AUX port works fine and yes it does seem that when you use it, sound will come out from both your stereo system and the built in speaker. But you can just turn down the volume on the cradle and the sound would just go through your stereo system only, music as well as voice guidance.

    Hope this help.

  13. Karon Thackston Says:

I received this at no cost through the Amazon Vine program, and purchased the Roadmate app for my iPod Touch on sale from Magellan for sixty dollars. I use it with the Garmin Portable Friction Mount, which works great and easily lets me use this unit in different cars.

My comments below apply to the combination of this unit with the Roadmate software since this unit does not come with any software.

On a clear day this unit picks up satellite signals faster than my Garmin Nuvi 660 or 350. It also gives more advance notice and better turn directions (e.g “make second left turn” instead of “turn on Clover Street in 500 feet), is easier to use to enter addresses, and is quicker to find points of interest.

Unfortunately on a very cloudy day it has failed sometimes to pick up any signal, which is a problem with any GPS unit, but seems to be more so with this unit compared to my Nuvis.

Everyone uses their GPS unit differently, but here are my concerns about this unit:

    1. Sometimes during a long trip I want to mute the voice giving directions (such as when my wife takes a nap) . On my Nuvi 660 this requires literally just two screen taps. On this unit it takes six: tap Menu, tap the Tools symbol, tap Settings, tap General Settings, tap Sound, and then turn the volume down. Just not practical to do while driving.

    2. POI Factory has a website with many useful and interesting points of interest, such as red light and speed traps, rest areas on different routes, etc. There is no way to download any of them onto this unit.

    3. Sometimes on a trip I like to tap the screen on my Nuvi 660 to see the series of upcoming turns. On this unit you can only see the series of turns when you set the route, but not while you are driving unless you go through a laborious process similar to what I described in muting the volume.

    4. If you travel abroad, there are SD cards that will give you maps of your locale (I bought one for my son to use with a Nuvi 350 when he went to Barcelona). You can’t do that with this unit. Also, if you have an iPod Touch rather than an iPhone, pedestrian mode will be useless.

    5. An iPod Touch and iPhone have a glossy surface, while a traditional GPS has a matte finish. The practical difference is that my iPod Touch sometimes picks up annoying reflections that make the screen more difficult to see while driving.

    6. When driving with sunglasses with direct sunlight hitting the unit, the screen is “washed out.” To be fair, the same thing happens on my wife’s Nuvi 350, though not on my Nuvi 660, which has a brighter screen.

    7. Sometimes when you hit a traffic jam it is helpful to get a suggested alternate route. There is no “detour” button on this unit.

    8. On a hot sunny day, even with the air conditioning on, you would never leave your cell phone or Mp3 player on the dashboard of your car while driving because the sun could eventually “fry” them.

But if you are going on a long trip on a hot sunny day, unless you frequently remove this unit from the dashboard, you risk “frying” your iPod Touch or iPhone. By contrast, I have left my Nuvi 660 on the dashboard for many hours on a hot sunny day while traveling to a vacation destination without any problems.

Bottom line: Since this unit is superior in some ways to my Nuvi 660, I will use it on trips where exposure to a hot sun is not a concern. While it does work, it is also missing “bells and whistles” that I like. If asked to choose between this and a comparably priced conventional GPS, I would definitely choose the latter. I think this is expensive for what you get.

  14. M.S. James Says:

Bought this, Navigon GPS App, and the Navionics lake maps, as a solution for the ipod touch, and have not been dissapointed. Alot of people write about the price of the unit and the software. For the most part you can buy a stand alone unit for less than this and the app, but try and find a stand alone gps unit you can use to get driving directions and lake maps all in one unit for the same price.

As far as the function of the unit itself. I found the volume to be more than adequate when driving down the road. (Not sure what the problem is with other reviewers) Gps locks on almost instantly, and it charges the ipod while plugged in.

Pros: Well designed. Adds accurate GPS capability to the ipod touch. Do not have to remove protective case to insert into cradle. Works with multiple GPS Apps.

Cons: Will not work without being plugged into a cigarette lighter.

Bottom line: If all you need is a unit to give driving directions, buy a separate unit, and carry both around with you. If you like flexibility to run any GPS app availible in the app store buy this, you won’t be dissapointed.

  15. Justina Michaels Says:

This product works very well as a GPS booster, but falls short as a speakerphone. The bluetooth feature is just OK, the speaker is loud enough, but most people can not hear me on the other end. On top of that when I play music from the Aux port it also plays on the bluetooth speaker, which is very annoying.

  16. Liam Edmenson Says:

It works beautifully. One just needs to be careful to follow instructions right. Once settled, it helps you get there in style, no hassle.

  17. Catherine Brown Says:

I use this with an iPhone 3GS with Navigon’s Mobile Navigator application. It’s done a very good job for me and outside of a few minor gripes I’d highly recommend it. I tested this against a brand new Garmin GPS unit and much to my surprise the signal and performance was better with the Car Kit + iPhone so I returned the Garmin and stuck with this.

The main gripe I have is the AUX audio, when you have an AUX cable in the audio still comes out of the phone too. For whatever reason it does this I have no idea! It’s not a big deal really since I hardly use the AUX output , it’s just a stupid design.

But otherwise it’s been a very steady and reliable device that I have come to rely on several days per week in my travels. The bluetooth for phone calls seems to work just fine, people never have an issues with hearing me and I can (usually) hear them just fine. The built in speaker is a little weak but that’s to be expected on such a small unit.

The increased GPS signal helps a lot , especially living in the city (Chicago) like I do, without the stronger GPS signal it’s very hard to get a steady signal but with it it’s been much better.

I read comments from others about it not charging their phone. Having it on the Car Kit does in fact charge the phone, but because a GPS app on a phone sucks the life out of the battery, the charging of the phone really just keeps the battery from going down while it’s in use. You will see minimal positive gains to the battery level while the GPS is being use, but you won’t it go down either. Without the unit charging you’d be lucky to get 2 hours of GPS use out of a full iPhone battery, but with the phone in the charger you can use it all day long.

If you are going to shuffle this baby around often I HIGHLY recommend you get a case for it. Otherwise it could get banged up very easily otherwise. I had the lighter adapter break while in transit and it was a pain to get it replaced. A standard lighter adapter would not work with it. I tried several of them to no avail and then I got a replacement directly from Magellan and it worked fine again.

  18. Steve Wood Says:

Charger cord arrived damaged. TomTom service was excellent, promptly replacing it. Product interfaces well with software which is available from iTunes for the iPhone. Product should ship with a written pointer to the TomTom reference manual available for download from the TomTom web site. Getting software from one site, the physical product from another, and the reference manual from yet another site was initially confusing. With all that said, the product works great and for those of us who are somewhat hard of hearing, the ability to play GPS directions through a car radio system is great. Not all of my cars have an input jack to allow this, but it is my preferred GPS where possible.

  19. Tim M Staines Says:

This is one of those products that come along every so often and completely blow the competition away.

You can tell a LOT of thought went into this car kit the moment you remove it from the box. In my opinion, it’s best feature is it’s ability to work with iDevices which are protected by cases. I probably have half a bazillion different cases/covers and the only one that didn’t work, was the Otterbox. The dock was definitely adjustable enough to hold it, but the Otterbox’s connector pass-through at the bottom prevented dock connection. That being said, I never really expected it to work.

BUILD/INSTALLATION: The unit is very robust and doesn’t feel cheap like the other (i.e. Tomtom) competing kits. The “ball and socket” design holds tight and allows for perfect alignment. Speaking of alignment, I absolutely LOVE it’s detented rotation ability. You can rotate the iDevice from landscape to portarit very quickly and with only one finger, with several default stops in between. In other words, you don’t need to loosen the ball and socket to rotate it. Excellent thinking! The provided suction cup mount is about as strong as they come. I tried it both on the windshield and with the included dash disc and both held perfectly during several rough rides and tests. I elected to use the dash mount disc permanently, as it just seems to look better to me.

FEATURES/OPERATION: The built-in GPS works great and, from my finding, is about a bar or two better than the iPhone 3gs’ on-board chip. Rotation (landscape or portrait) doesn’t seem to affect it much, if at all and I’ve only lost signal when going in tunnels. Bluetooth pairing was uneventful and worked as expected. Although the speaker isn’t the best and callers reported me being “far away” sounding, which admittedly I was. I’m not deducting any points for this, as it’s just the nature of the speakerphone beast.

Speaking of the on board speaker, here is the only negative I have with the unit, and why I only gave this 4 stars. The dock has a 1/8″ (headphone) stereo line out, which gets its input from the dock connector. This is wonderful as you get pure, clean sound, bypassing the head phones OP amp. The problem is that the docks built in speaker DOESN’T SHUT OFF when the line out is being used, so you have good sound coming out of your car speakers and tinny sound coming from the dock. It DOES have a volume control on it, which will eliminate the sound coming out of the dock speaker, while leaving the sound flowing to your stereo unaltered(the line out is NOT volume controlled), but this also eliminates handsfree bluetooth audio. The bluetooth conversation does NOT come over your car speakers. On such a well thought out product, I cannot fathom why this was overlooked. Either allow bluetooth audio to come out of the car speakers during a phone conversation, or simply allow the onboard speaker to disconnect while the audio out jack is being used (easiest and preferred).

The dock worked beautifully with every navigation app I tried. I’ve used it with Magellan Roadmate 2010, Tomtom 2010, Navigon North America 2010, CoPiolot Live, xGPS, MotionX GPS Drive, Mapquest, aSmartHud, etc etc etc. They all “just work”.

In conclusion, even with the negative I previously mentioned, I still love this product and have bought one for my dad to use with his second generation iTouch, which works perfectly. I HIGHLY reccomend this unit over the competition. Especially now that it can be had for under 100 bones.

  20. Abi Shaan Says:

Disappointed by speaker phone volume. You can barely hear the built-in speaker for phone calls. However it seems a little louder for navigational text. However, it’s strange because music playing through this Magellan speaker can get loud enough to cut through road noise and the car radio. Why can’t the voice be louder? It’s as if the audio levels on the voice clips and phone calls don’t reach the same level as louder music. This is true even with the Magellan Roadmate App’s volume settings turned all the way up and the car kit’s volume cranked up. Perhaps this can be fixed with a Magellan App or firmware update.
For comparison purposes, using a Motorola T215 bluetooth speakerphone is much louder.
This Magellan unit can connect to your car stereo which is nice. You just have to balance the voice output of the navigation software because of audio level differences.
Based on the fact that the Magellan built-in speaker doesn’t appear to be significantly louder than the iPhone 3gs’ speaker for phone calls it seems like it’s ineffective and therefore the bluetooth interface is not as useful to me.
Phone calls don’t seem to be able to go out over your car stereo speakers. This may be true of other units and it may be an Apple problem, or maybe a synchronization issue, but I don’t know.
Overall, the unit is solidly built and can handle my iPhone with a thick Speck protective skin.
The suction cup and swivel seem to be nicely done.
I didn’t have any compatibility issues like I experienced with a Scosche adapter.
It’s a nice unit, but with the poor built-in speakerphone volume for phone calls I think it’s a little overpriced. I’m curious to see if others have the same experience.
    (Update after highway road test)
After testing out the unit for a couple of days on a daily round-trip commute of 60+ miles, mostly at turnpike/highway speeds around 55-65mph, I think the built-in speaker volume turned up to its maximum level is not great for phone calls or text-to-speech directions while at highway speeds if your vehicle is prone to pick up highway noise (windows are closed).
This test was done using the Magellan Nav iPhone App with its internal voice volume setting also set to its highest level.
On local roads under 35mph the volume was adequate. For comparison, I tested out an older dedicated unit and its volume was powerful enough on local roads and highways while still listening to my car radio.
Phone call volume is still weaker than text-to-speech directions.
My current working setup is to connect the auxilliary jack into my car radio and use a Motorola T215 bluetooth speakerphone for calls. Unfortunately, if navigation speech is going through the car’s system then I can’t listen to the radio, and can only listen to the iPod. As a side note, as a workaround it would be nice if Apple let a radio-type Application like AOL Radio work at the same time as the Magellan Navigation App so that it can substitute for the car radio.
Perhaps if your vehicle’s interior is quiet at highway speeds you might have better luck than I’m currently having.

  21. Jeff Bachmeier Says:

My problem with this product is that when the audio out is connected to the car aux jack, there is a high frequency buzz. My theory is that the power connector is located too close to the output jack and that this is a design issue. (I could be wrong) I have tried this on 3 cars with regular and super shielded output cables and I get the same results. To bad, as I really liked this in all other aspects. I must be able to play Pandora music or listen to my books through my car audio system without hearing this constant buzz however.
Lets see if my replacement unit has the same problem.

  22. William R. Murray Says:

I just purchased this a few weeks ago and am completely happy with it. Not only does it work as a GPS unit, but it also charges my iphone and allows me to talk hands-free. My husband’s GPS was stolen so instead of buying another unit, I got the Tom-Tom kit and I love it more than my old GPS. It’s completely intuitive and it syncs with my contact list and the google applications so I can find directions to ANYTHING so quickly. It is also good to get my iphone out of my hands while I’m driving – I’m embarrassed to admit that I’m texting less and I’m driving a lot more safely. The blue-tooth feature is great so now I can talk in my car without holding the phone to my ear – again, a nice safety feature. I also purchased the traffic feature and am excited to use that this upcoming fourth of July weekend. It definitely enhances the GPS of the iphone – must have some kind of chip in it or something that makes it just as good as my old GPS if not better. I highly recommend this product. It is pricey, so I can’t quite give it 5 stars, but I’m thrilled with it so far.

  23. Paul James Harrison Says:

First of all, note that this device is hardware only. You’ll need to download an app from the App Store for a full navigation device. The current Google Maps on the iPhone isn’t adequate. Hopefully we’ll someday get the more full featured Maps app that Google put on their own phones.

I’m using the MotionX GPS Drive app. The app is currently 99 cents but the voice navigation costs $2.99/month or $24.99/year. It’s a great app and my review is in the context of using it. Another app would give a different experience but I think it’s great to decouple the GPS hardware from the navigation software and have choice. Competition is good.

MotionX uses Microsoft Bing on the back end for maps and searching. I prefer a “connected” navigation app that uses the power of the internet. Why be limited to the tiny subset of Points of Interest that are included in apps with static maps? This is my main reason for wanting to use the iPhone as my navigation device. I constantly found myself searching for places on my iPhone and then manually entering the address in my car’s nav system.

Now, on to the Magallen hardware and it’s quite good. The mount is physically well designed. The iPhone is easy to get in and out. Best of all, it works with cases! The dock connector pivots so it’s not an awkward insertion angle and there is a retractable clamp on top to hold it on place. There is an adjustable foot that presses against the rear of the iPhone to provide support and handles different thicknesses of iPhones and iPods with and without cases.

It includes a suction cup mount that attaches with a ball and socket joint. I do wish it had more range of motion. The suction cup is the clamping kind which is preferable to the ones that rely on the force you apply. It works well on the windshield but don’t even bother with the little stick-on disc to mount it on the dash. I like friction (bean bag) mounts. Navgear ME201133 Universal Dashboard Mount for Portable GPS Units is my choice because it works well on my non-flat dash.

The Magellan has a nice mechanism for rotation between portrait and landscape orientation. It rotates easily and then holds it in one of 4 positions. I want to emphasize that this is not just a less elegant solution that uses friction to hold it in place and then rotates to any position. The Magellan can be rotated with one hand and then it locks exactly horizontally or vertically. It’s features like this that the engineer in me appreciates and gives satisfaction for this product’s high price.

The power is supplied by a typical mini-usb jack. A car charger is included. There is a headphone jack and volume dial for the built-in speaker. I’m not using the Magellan for music playback but you should read the other reviews if you plan to do this. There are some complaints about volume differences.

The Magellan speaker is adequate for nav instructions and phone calls. It’s louder and clearer than the iPhone speaker at max volume. The microphone is marginal. My callers could understand me but one said I was “distant”. It’s comparable to other aftermarket car speakerphones. It’s not as good as a headset or a microphone that can be built into the car. Note that the iPhone has an independent volume control for Bluetooth. If phone calls aren’t loud enough this may be why. You can adjust this volume while Bluetooth is active and it’s not the same as the main volume.

A few reviews have questioned why Bluetooth is necessary if it’s connected with the dock port. The reason is to provide a separate audio path for phone calls. Without Bluetooth, the iPhone will mute all other audio when there is a phone call and it wouldn’t be possible for the navigation app to give verbal directions. As it is, a phone call will still kick you out of the nav app and you have to use the iPhone UI to start it again. This is annoying and is a downside of the all-in-one convergence.

I’m ambivalent about the mount’s GPS. In my usage it’s no better or worse than the one built into the phone. The problem is you’re paying for this GPS. I would like the identical mount without the added expense of the GPS. I don’t know whether that product is available in some form. I know there are cheaper iPhone car mounts but are they as well designed? Whether you think the Magellan is worth it will depend on how price conscious you are and how much value you place on convenience and good design.

Overall, I’m very happy with the iPhone + Magellan mount + MotionX app as a GPS platform. It’s so superior to the Honda nav in my car that when I need navigation I actually stick the suction cup to the big LCD screen of my built-in system! Yeah, it’s funny but the statement it makes is clear.

  24. Blaz Valentinuzzi Says:

Great product. I encountered two problems with my iPhone 3GS running iOS 4, which were fixed quite easily. The first, numerous folks have complained about the aux audio jack not working when a call comes in. The easy way around this is to plug your aux jack into the iPhone’s headphone jack and that way the iPhone controls all audio functions, and stops the music to accept calls through your speakers. The second problem the unit was disconnecting about every minute and would sound the connect alarm each time it re-connected. I simply restarted my phone and went on iTunes to ensure software was up to date. After this the problem was gone.

I guess I’d give it 5 stars if the product’s audio jack worked the way the iPhone’s headphone jack does.

  25. Luningning De Guzman Says:

I just replaced my TomTom mount with the Magellan. WOW OH WOW. Boy I wish I had gotten this on the first go round. This is incredible. The mount is so secure, the speakerphone quality is incredible, and I swear the audio quality is amazing. Also- you can use any case with this mount, and don’t have to use an app to disable an annoying pop up if you are not using the proprietary GPS software. What a pleasure. Don’t look back- buy!

  26. John Laney Says:

I travel for work and the purpose of buying TomTom Navigation was to have 1 device for everything. I was extremely disappointed with the TomTom App before this kit because the accuracy with just awful. This kit includes a GPS chip and instantly makes the iPhone as accurate as any stand alone GPS. I want 1 device because I have a convertible and want to be able to play music and have my navigation provide directions over the car speakers.

    Awesome, totally worth the investment.

  27. Sudath Priyantha Says:

I received my Magellan premium car kit finally. I have already downloaded the Magellan GPS app from the iTune store and I’m very excited about how wonderful this car kit functions.
Not sure about some of the other reviewers but this Magellan car kit makes my iPhone so much better with much louder audio volume, I had to turn the volume down on the car kit because it was too loud.
The Bluetooth paired up quickly and the GPS reception is so much better when the iPhone is connected to the Magellan car kit.
This is the perfect solution since my family owns 5 iPhones, mostly 3Gs and not everyone own a GPS, with this Magellan car kit, we can share the car kit between our iPhones when someone needs to take a trip.
We all use protective cases and it’s great that it is not necessary to remove our phones from the protective cases when we mount the iPhone to the car kit. This is a huge plus and a great design from Magellan.
I feel some reviewers may look into the mirror instead of blaming Magellan if they don’t understand this car kit was probably designed for convenience more than cost savings. When they paid the $129 for the hardware, they should not expect the software to be included with the hardware.
The option is they can buy the Motion X software for $2.99 and use this car kit with a 3rd party navigation software and still enjoy the better GPS reception and BT features along with excellent audio volume output.
There will be some reviewers that may be disappointed but I would guess more will be delighted to find such options for their iPhones as the Magellan premium car kit.
I’m tired of carrying a cell phone and a GPS, and with this Magellan car kit, it made my life much more enjoyable.
Thank you Magellan for introducing us to this wonderful GPS solution for our iPhones.

  28. Jamie Alan Says:

Big kudos to Magallen for making a kit that holds an iPhone in a case. I don’t know what percentage of iPhone users have cases, but it seems to be the majority from what I’ve seen…not sure why the other car kit manufacturers haven’t figured this out.

As others have said, the documentation that comes with the kit is minimal. I’m pretty handy, but I don’t think I got mine physically put together quite right because sometimes it clicks through detents when you rotate it and sometimes it doesn’t. No problem holding my iPhone securely though.

I still haven’t figured out how to properly use the Bluetooth button on the back of the unit, I guess I need to read through the directions again because I can’t get it to hang up calls without using the hangup button on the phone screen.

The big flaw is the same as what others have mentioned: there is a horrible discrepancy between Bluetooth volume and music/navigation volume. I have to turn up the volume ALL the way to hear anything over Bluetooth while music/nav is quite loud even at low volume settings. This is a big problem when going back and forth between the two. Also, people who I call are having problems hearing me. I’m not sure where the microphone is…maybe it is making use of the iPhone’s mic which is pointing down and not towards the driver?

  29. Shawn LeBrun Says:

While I initially thought the value of this product was extremely poor I came away far happier having actually used the product extensively on a road trip. Sure, I think the price should be closer to fifty bucks but when all is said and done you also feel better by reducing duplication and clutter. But the key is that the product has more than appears at first glance

***** Performance – with the TomTom 1.5 navigation software – it just works, there were some very minor hiccups, but I found it entirely dependable and solid on the iPhone and wouldn’t hesitate to rely on it as the only navigation/map in the car. It also looks brilliant on the Retina display (which 1.5 makes use of).

***** Construction – very ruggedly built, no worries jamming it in a suitcase. The unit always attached the first time to the window, didn’t fall off with fog or condensation or bumps. I also felt that it absorbed harsh bumps and although the iPhone doesn’t have any moving parts, I just felt better about the docking safety. It’s also impossible for the iPhone to fall out as far as I can tell.

***** Extra GPS receiver – worked far faster and more reliably than the iPhone one (which is quite good to begin with). The only thing that threw it off were sharp cliffs and only for a few seconds then.

***** Charger – lights up so you know its on, keeps unit charged well and you almost always leave the car with 100% charge.

***** Speaker – plenty loud enough and far better than the iPhone embedded speaker

    — Negatives

** Battery Health – When mounted to the window on a bright sunny day the black iPhone 4 gets extremely warm due to the sun. Most traditional GPS’s don’t have batteries so it’s not a problem, but for an iPhone the battery is likely the most sensitive component and the one part that is most likely to deteriorate in performance. Although I haven’t experienced any negative short-term effects it did make me feel a little guilty about the long term implications.

    * No Compass Integration – until you start moving the navigation software doesn’t make use of a compass to determine which direction you are pointing. Kind of annoying.

Note: No maps or software are included

  30. M. Newman Says:

The Magellan Premium Car Kit for iPhone and iPod is a windshield-attachable charging unit with built-in speakerphone and GPS receiver. It communicates with the iPhone or iPod by bluetooth.
The bundled cigarette lighter adapter connects to the stand via a standard mini USB connector.
The main unit features a volume control wheel for the speakerphone, and a stereo minijack to connect to your car stereo.
The car kit provides the following features:
    - charging
    - speakerphone
    - speaker for navigation guidance prompts
    - audio output

I used the car kit in conjunction with Magellan’s navigation software on my iPhone 3Gs and my new iPhone 4. It’s adjustable and the phone fits without having to take it out of its case — with the exception of the Otterbox case, which is too thick at the bottom and prevented proper dock connection.

Results are a mixed bag. I didn’t find the supposedly better built-in GPS receiver to be a marked improvement over the GPS chip inside the iPhone 3Gs. The iPhone 4 was actually more accurate in my very informal tests.
The bluetooth pairing was frustrating. The minute the kit is powered, it’s constantly trying to take over your phone, even if you’re on another bluetooth connection. You could be in the middle of a call on your iPhone or a bluetooth headset, and suddenly the Car Kit kicks in. It wouldn’t be so bad if the speaker was loud enough (it isn’t) and the microphone decent (it isn’t either, and people I was talking to complained about the sound quality).
I also had a problem with the arm design: it’s very short, which is probably perfectly adequate in a small sedan but completely useless in an SUV or minivan where you’re sitting a mile away from the windshield. At this price, Magellan could have included a few attachment options (short neck arm, long neck arm, air vent hooks).

In the end, the limitations make it difficult to recommend: if you have an iPhone, the Car Kit will add more frustration than function. However, it is a good complement to turn an iPod touch into a navigation system since the touch lacks the iPhone’s built-in GPS, so I would still recommend it to sedan-driving iPod touch users.

I should also add that the Magellan navigation app for the iPhone/iPod touch is really stellar, particularly when running on the iPhone 4′s superfast hardware. Screen refreshes fast, graphics are gorgeous, the POI list is extensive and the user interface very pleasant to use. I tried the Navigon and Tom Tom apps and so far Magellan is the clear winner of the three in my opinion.

  31. Amit A Desai Says:

I first bought the Tom Tom kit. But it did not hold my iPhone at the proper angle, flopping to and fro. I did a u-turn and returned it where I bought it, and replaced it with this unit. It works great with a dashboard mat, and dramatically improves the GPS signal as advertised. It is annoying that the ipod sound also comes out of the stand’s speaker. But I just turn it down unless a call comes through.

I just returned from my first trip with it, and it worked without a problem. I am very satisified, and pleased it works with my TomTom and Navigon apps.

  32. GarethNewfawn Says:

To begin… let me say that I have purchased many cheaper car cradles for my iPhone and almost all of them are cheaply made and break easily. I was looking for a replacement when I came across this unit. The $129 is a price barrier for most(including me), but I took the chance and believe it has already paid off.

I installed this in my car two days ago, and I have to say it is working great. The bluetooth works excellent and the sound quality is great (do not know what the other buyers problem was). I might have to add that the bluetooth works too great… it connects to my phone when I am in the house! The construction of this model is sturdy, I have found no areas of weakness (like other models, particularly the horizontal/vertical knob).

I use GPS Drive by MotionX ($2.99) in the app store. The program works with the cradle with no problems. I would never spend $60+ for a navigation app when these cheaper programs work just as good.

The only problems I hope to solve with this unit are:
1)This unit does not power off when I cut my car off (could be an issue with my car)
2)When I play music using this unit (which is connected to my stereo using the AUX connector), it comes out through my car stereo AND the speaker on the unit. It’s not a horrible thing, but I like to be able to control the sound with one volume control (my car stereo), not both. I do have to say, the music doesn’t sound too bad through the cradle speaker.

These problems are minor to me, and I will be using this unit for a long time. If you are debating purchasing one, I highly recommend that you do. You will not regret it.

  33. Limonly Jaughtone Says:

This unit is perfect for what I need — a hands-free, robust GPS accessory for my iphone, that I can use in my cars or in a small airplane.

    Pro:
It worked fine with my rubber-cased iPhone 3GS.
It’s really solid and well-made and the adjustment to fit different devices is easy to use and requires no brain cycles to figure out.
You can install, load, and unload it one-handed.
It kept accurate position location using Apple’s built-in Maps application the aviation moving map WingX (note that I fly low and slow — below 10,000 feet and 120 knots usually).
It returns to the Maps app seamlessly after taking an incoming call. (Haven’t had a call while flying, wouldn’t take the call if I did).
It replaced my dependable but woefully outdated Garmin aviation GPS90, giving me a lot of the function of a new Aera for much less, and I still only carry one device (and move one Car Kit between cars and airplanes).
The suction cup has actually stuck to everything I’ve attached it to, including glass and plexiglas windshields, side windows, and an aluminum instrument panel. You don’t think about suction cups until you unwisely save money on something with a badly engineered one.

    Con:
Doesn’t come with an app, and the packaging doesn’t even, as far as I can see, name the Magellan app (the Amazon listing does).
It’s expensive for what it is.

    Summary:
It’s a good piece of equipment. I haven’t seen the “this device is not designed…” warning with this unit, but obviously some have. I dunno what causes this difference as the reason for the alert is, like all things iPhone, a bit of a black box. I haven’t had any GPS problems with the device (although a few months ago I had a lot of GPS problems with the bare iPhone, which turned out to be caused partly by the satellite constellation being weak where I was).

I would like this as a mount even if it didn’t up the phone’s weakling GPS game, so that fact that it does is a big plus.

Note that I bought it when it was available as one of Amazon’s Gold Box Deals, so I personally thought it was a great value. I rate the value much lower at the higher regular price, but you can always watch the Gold Box daily (RSS is your friend) and hope it comes up again.

Several of the folks at the airport have found the WingX and Magellan combination attractive. Magellan’s lawyers would probably have a cow if they knew we were doing this.

  34. George F Franks III Says:

    Hi,
I’ve been using this mount for months now and overall I’m pleased with it. The best thing about it is it holds the phone really well. It was secure using my 3Gs and now with my iPhone 4. The telescoping top bracket allows it to accommodate a wide variety of cases too (Note: I did have trouble with the Apple Bumper case as mentioned below). The thirty pin dock connector at the bottom also pivots. This makes it much easier to get the iPhone in and out of the mount.

    Here are some other notes:

    Positives:
    - Holds the phone very securely
    - Easily switches very smoothly from portrait to landscape
    - Charges the phone (though not very quickly if it all when using the GPS)
    - Provides an audio output jack so you can leave the cable connected when you remove the phone

    Negatives:
    - The speakerphone quality is only marginal. I wasn’t expecting it to be great and it’s not.
    - The GPS reception is disappointing. Considering they market the built in GPS heavily you would expect it to pickup a really strong signal. My standalone Garmin Nuvi walks all over it when it comes to reception
    - The volume dial is very poorly placed. It’s on the side behind the phone. I always struggle with adjusting it while I’m driving.
    - The bracket blocks the camera. I thought it would be cool if I could snap pictures/take video while driving but that’s not going to happen.
    - It would not charge using the Apple Bumper Case on my iPhone 4. It does charge with my other cases including the Otterbox Commuter. The bumper case is just a little too thick at the bottom. To be fair a lot of my other iPhone accessories (cables, speakers, etc.) don’t work with the bumper case either
    - It costs too darn much for what you get. The value proposition would be much better if it cost $50 or even $75 instead of $100+

If you’re looking for a speaker phone you can do much better. For me it works well using my iPhone 4, Otterbox Commuter case, and TomTom’s navigation software.
    Best regards,
    John

  35. Anee Steven Says:

I was very hesitant about purchasing this mount for two reasons:

    1. I have the Navigon software, not the TomTom application.
    2. Everyone says you mount falls into portrait mode when you hit a bump.

Regardless, I bought one because I found it for $119 at the Apple Store. I can say it works flawlessly with the Navigon software. The bad reviews the device is getting are from the fact that the mount will fall into portrait mode when you hit a bump. This is not really accurate. You don’t notice it at first but you can slide the mount up and down which fully prevents that from happening. The people who gave the device bad reviews probably didn’t realize this. When you take the mount out of the box it’s all the way extended and will fall into portrait mode very easily unless you slide it to the right a bit so the weight is balanced. Once you do that it will stay in the correct position regarldess of how bumpy the road is.

One other thing I really liked about this mount is the fact that I didn’t have to take my iPhone out of the case to use it. I highly recommend this mount. It is compact, well built and gets great reception. The speaker is also loud and clear. The design of the suction cup is excellent as well, it’s got a dial on it that lets you really crank it down so it won’t come off the window regardless of the humidity or temperature. Great device.

  36. John B Mayall Says:

Won’t fit my iPhone with case. Good build quality, sturdy. Still get low GPS signal at times, Volume is a little louder than iPhone’s speaker. Not a good replacement for my Garmin. I will keep my Garmin just in case.

  37. James L. Pearson Says:

I have been looking for a hands free solution for my iPhone which didn’t entail doing major surgery to the interior trim. My first attempt was a visor clip-on Motorola device, which doesn’t solve the problem of charging the iPhone, so I decided to try what appears to be the best choice out there for the time being.
The Magellan Premium car kit is easy to install with a well design suction cup. The ability to rotate the screen to landscape mode is nice. There are improvements that could be made to the this kit. My major gripe appears to be a difficulty of the iPhone to automatically connect up to the kit and quite often I have to cycle the power on the power plug or manually go into setting on the iPhone to reconnect. I am not certain of this is a iPhone or Magellan deficiency. Other suggestion for improvements is volume control is a little flimsy. The release mechanism could also be made simpler. As it is now, two hands are required to removed the iPhone from the holder. Final two suggestion for improvement would be to add some form of a sun shield to prevent screen being washed out and a smaller more compact cigarette lighter power plug.

  38. Steve Dimeck Says:

First of all, anyone upset that there kit did not include the necessary GPS application should read the product description more carefully before buying something. That being said it is a little misleading how Magellan calls this kit “A complete GPS navigation solution” right on the front of the box even though you must first purchase a GPS app on Itunes before using it to navigate.

That aside this Kit appears to be very well made and seems to work exactly as advertised. I do have to mark it down for the HORRIBLY minimal instructions the unit comes with. The instructions are literally one sheet of paper the size of my Iphone! Not only that but they mention a button on the back called the “multifunction switch” but don’t even bother to tell you what functions it actually does…I’m serious…they mention a button and don’t tell you anything more about it. Only after looking for video reviews of the kit on YouTube did I find out that the button lets you receive calls, call last dialed number, and a handful of other functions that should have been mentioned in the instructions. My advice is look up the video reviews on YouTube if and after you get the kit…I found it very helpful.

It works perfectly with my iphone and ipod touch. I use Navigon and Magellan apps for ipod touch. Cannot install other apps on my ipod touch. GPS reception is much better. Better than TomTom because one cradle can be used for iphone and ipod touch. With TomTom you have to buy one for iphone and one for ipod touch.
